Indian first birthday parties are rich in tradition and quite special to the family. Two Hindu rituals of Annaprasanam and Mundan may be performed on a child’s first birthday. The Annaprasanam is the giving of the first solid food. The Mundan is a shearing of the child’s hair very close to the scalp, sometimes leaving a small patch at the top of the head. The priest will then bless the child and the barber and scatter their hair in the river as an offering. The significance of the ritual of the child’s first food is for the development of health. The ritual of cutting hair signifies a purification and cleansing of negative actions or traits from past lives. The celebrated child wears bright colors and guests typically come dressed in traditional saris.
